New Leadership at East Riding of Yorkshire

It is with regret that we announce the resignation of our Musical Director Ian Scott. Ian has had a very successful three and a half year association with the band, including two trips to Cheltenham for the Third Section National Finals and a win in the North of England Third Section Regional Championships in 2014. Ian’s professional approach has reflected on the band, who enjoy a strong following in the East Riding and beyond. Ian has realised that the combined commitments as Musical Director at East Riding, his renewed playing career and the travel involved, meant something had to give and it was his bass trombone that won out!

We are pleased to announce that Mr Garry Hallas MD at Emley Band, a long-time friend of East Riding is to take the band to the Second Section Regional Championships in Durham in 2016. We are inviting applications for the position of Musical Director after the area championships. We are looking for a capable, committed and ambitious individual who can progress with the band. We have an established concert programme and are looking to increase our contesting presence. We are fortunate to have a full band with strong soloists and good rehearsal attendance. We are also planning a recording project this year and looking forward to Hull City of Culture 2017.

David Vivian
Chairman of The East Riding of Yorkshire Band

Performance helps Make a Difference

Last Saturday (16 May) the Band performed at the Clowes Memorial Methodist Church in Hull. The Church has provided the Band with rehearsal and storage facilities for many years and this was an opportunity for us to give something back by helping to raise funds for the Church’s “Making a Visible Difference” project.

Newly appointed Lay Pastor, Matt Sheard, thanked the Band saying:

It was a wonderful and varied programme and made all who attended the concert smile. Lots of the people who were there were bobbing and swaying along to the VE day music and listening intently to the wonderful hymn tunes. They were also tapping along to the stirring marches.

The fact that you were prepared to come and give your time for free to entertain the community was appreciated by the church. The money raised will help us to continue to make a visible difference in our community which has been a particular project the church has being working on for some time. It will also go towards helping us fund our family worker project”.

CHRISTMAS CHEER AND THANKS

The band concluded its busy 2014 season with a series and small group carolling events across Hull and the East Riding in addition to traditional concerts and a carol service.

The carolling was a new venture to raise funds for the band and to spread a little Christmas cheer throughout the region. The band would like to thank the organisations that engaged the band and invited us to play on their premises, in particular:

  • Waitrose, Willerby
  • Sainsburys, Hessle
  • South Cave Farmers Market,
  • St Stephens, Hull and Handheld Food,
  • South Cave and Skirlaugh Parish Councils

We would also like to thank the countless members of the public who contributed.

With best wishes to everyone for Christmas and the New Year
